Alstom has been awarded euro 400 million (Rs 3,250 crore) from state-run Power Grid Corporation for building a transmission link between Haryana and Chhattisgarh.

It will execute the Rs 3,250 crore Ultra-High Voltage Direct Current link between Champa (Chhattisgarh) and Kurukshetra (Haryana), the French power equipment maker said in a statement.

This new 3,000 MW transmission link will run parallel to the first UHVDC transmission link awarded to Alstom in 2012, increasing the total transmission capacity of the system to 6,000 MW.

The link will transfer clean, bulk power efficiently from the Chhattisgarh region to the load centre in the northern region of the country, Alstom said.

It will build converter terminal stations, converter transformers, gas-insulated switchgear, substation equipment, and communication and supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA).

All equipment will be manufactured by Alstom's facilities in India, United Kingdom, France and Italy.

"Alstom has been the frontrunner in deploying the latest HVDC technology and solutions in India. The Champa-Phase II HVDC project follows the earlier success of Champa-Phase I, and confirms Alstom's market and technological leadership in the HVDC domain," Rathin Basu, Managing Director of Alstom T&D India said.

HVDC is increasingly the preferred choice for utilities to ensure efficient, reliable and bulk power transmission.

In India, Alstom has supplied HVDC systems for Vizag (Andhra Pradesh), Chandrapur (Maharashtra) and Sasaram (Bihar).
