After being out of print for the last 15 years, some famous comic titles from the Amar Chitra Katha repertoire is now back in the Bengali language.
"We have rolled out some Bengali titles in the market from this week. The publication was stopped for the last 15 years, but we decided to revive it as the regional language comic segment has immense scope," Manas Mohan, COO of ACK Media, the publishers, told PTI today.
Eight Bengali titles - 'Buddhiman Birbal', 'Rasik Birbal', 'Ganesh', Ganga', 'Hanuman', 'Karn', 'Hari-Parvati' and 'Love-Kush' are already in the market, while around 20 other titles would be available in Bengali by the end of this year.
Amar Chitra Katha has become a household name in India for reinventing quintessentially Indian stories from history, mythology, literature and folktales for generations of children using the comic book format.
Mohan said there would also be popular tales from the life and times of legends of Bengal like Swami Vivekananda and Rabindranath Tagore narrated in comic format for children and young adults.
A major attraction would be the nationalist novel 'Anandamath' written by Bankim Chandra Chatterji. The national song of India 'Vande Mataram' was first published in the novel which is set in the backdrop of the devastating Bengal famine of 1770 and the unsuccessful Sannyasi Rebellion.
The publishers would translate the novel in a graphic format.
"With our Bengali titles we want to go beyond the cities and target sub-urban and rural population where literacy is increasing and we can find younger audiences in a regional language," Mohan said.
The leading publishers in the storytelling segment are foraying big into the regional language market all over India and are bringing in titles in Gujarati, Marathi and Punjabi.
