The simmering feud between teachers and the AMU Vice Chancellor Lt General (Retd) Zamiruddin Shah appears to have intensified, with the Aligarh Muslim University Teachers Association alleging that the VC had misbehaved with one of its members.
While talking to media persons, AMUTA Secretary, Mustafa Zaidi, alleged that last Friday the VC used threatening language and tried to browbeat him over a dharna staged by the teachers' organisation on October 13.
Shah had reprimanded Zaidi for not taking leave of absence before he held the dharna, sources said.
"The VC is of the clear view that students have full right to protest anytime. If however a teacher chooses to go on dharna he or she has to take leave of absence before missing classes as they are paid for it," an AMU spokesperson said.
The AMUTA yesterday also held a meeting of its executive committee and passed a resolution condemning the VC's behaviour and threatened to intensify its agitation, Zaidi said.
The association has also sought support of Federation of Central Universities Teachers (FEDCUTA) while the Jamia Teachers' Association Secretary M S Bhatt today assured them of full support in the stir.
Zaidi today said the grouse of teachers was fuelled by the fact that since the past four months they have been trying to initiate a dialogue with the VC to no avail.
Since three months, AMUTA has been demanding a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in this year's medical entrance test and other admissions, and has charged the university administration with flouting norms and procedures in PhD admissions.
The teacher's organisation is also demanding revocation of last year's suspension of two teachers.
