Film-maker Anik Dutta, whose "Bhooter Bhobishyot" set a new box office record in Bengali films and had a Hindi remake, has made a new film - a mystery thriller.
The movie "Meghnadbadh Rahasya" is not based on Michael Madhusudan Dutta's poem "Meghnadbadh Kavya", though it has references to the famous work, which the director would rather not reveal for now.
"There is footage of a stage play based on Michael's Madhusudan's work, interpolated with the film which deals with mystery surrounding an award-winning science fiction writer," Anik told PTI here after the film's trailer launch today.
'Meghnad Badh Kavya', first published in 1861, is the most acclaimed poem by Michael Madhusudan which made a different interpretation of the Ramayana character Meghnad's death.
"The whodunnit progresses in a classical Agatha Christie style with limited number of suspects. It has a classical Hollywood flavour while the title suggests the film has references to the classical literature of Bengal," Anik said.
Dutta, a former ad agency executive, said that he found himself more attuned to the literary traditions of Sukumar Ray-Satyajit Ray than the neo-Bengali literature.
"I can't relate with the present-day neo-Bengalis," he said.
The director said that the idea of doing the film struck him first in 2012 during the post-production work of 'Bhooter Bhobisyot.
Raabta singer Nikita Gandhi has rendered a song in the film composed by Debojyoti Mishra.
