The official said the trouble started when some anti-socials attacked the local organisers of the function at Englishbazar's Khasimari area on the occasion of Manasa puja with bombs and revolvers last night.
In the firing, one of the organisers, Sukhu Ghosh (50), died on the spot. Two others, injured in the firing were rushed to Malda Medical College where their condition was stated to be critical, hospital sources said.
Meanwhile, the anti-socials decamped with the body of Ghosh. A strong police reinforcement from Englishbazar headquarters rushed to the area to recover the body and launched a combing operation, Deputy Superintendent of Police Siddharth Dorabjee said.
A police force led by the Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek Modi today recovered the body from Khasimari area and sent it for postmortem. No arrest has been made yet.
