The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today urged Governor E S L Narsimhan to intervene in the issue of the Telangana government levying tax on vehicles entering its territory from Andhra Pradesh.
It is "neither ethical nor legal" to impose such a tax since Hyderabad is the common capital of both states for ten years, an APCC memorandum submitted to the Governor stated.
"All of a sudden, the Telangana government issued orders to levy entry tax on transport vehicles from Andhra Pradesh entering its territory from April 1, 2015, despite being fully aware that Hyderabad is the joint capital of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as per Section 5 of the AP Re-organisation Act, 2014," APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy stated in the memorandum.
"The organic linkage between Telangana and AP, as per the spirit of AP Re-organisation Act, 2014, will last until June 1, 2024," he said.
Observing that lakhs of people commute daily from AP to Telangana, the APCC said it is "neither ethical nor legal" to impose such a tax considering provisions of the AP Re-organisation Act.
"We request you to kindly use your good offices to prevail upon both Telangana and AP governments to amicably sort out their differences. Vehicles coming to their own capital cannot in any way be subjected to entry tax," the APCC memorandum said.
In a separate memorandum, the APCC also urged Narasimhan, who is the common Governor for AP and Telangana, to intervene to provide relief to the drought-hit people in Andhra Pradesh.
