Apollo Gleneagles CEO resigns

Facing allegations of medical negligence and excessive charging following the death of a patient, Apollo Gleneagles Hospital president and CEO (eastern region) Rupali Basu resigned today.
Basu, who is currently abroad, has emailed her resignation to the Apollo management, a senior official of the hospital told PTI.
"Dr Rupali Basu has resigned today and there will be a new leadership taking over in the form of CEO Rana Dasgupta with immediate effect," a senior official said.
Dr N Satya Bhama, Director of Medical Sciences (Southern Region) of the Apollo Group will assume additional charge of the eastern region to oversee all processes, the officer added.

Last week, during a meeting with private hospitals and nursing homes in and around the city, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had pulled up Apollo Gleneagles for negligence in treatment and charging patients exorbitantly, advising it to be more humanitarian in its approach.
But barely days after that, the family members of a patient, Sanjay Roy, who was injured in a road accident, accused the hospital of medical negligence and delay in his release for failing to settle the "over-charged" bill. This, the family said, led to his death at a state-run hospital.

The hospital also came under severe criticism for keeping a fixed deposit certificate of the family after receiving a cheque to settle the bill.

Apollo Gleaneagles had charged Rs 7.23 lakh for treating Roy for seven days.
A probe team has started investigating the incident along with Kolkata Police after Roy's wife Ruby lodged an official complaint.
