The Vishrambaug police arrested two former principals, a serving principal and a senior clerk of Sir Parshurambhau College here, for illegally collecting around Rs 29 lakh as fees from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students.
Junior Magistrate First Class N H Jadhav released all of them on a personal bond of Rs 15,000. The police has filed chargesheets against all the accused in the court.
Former college principals Madhav Anant Pendse (65, Sadhashiv Peth, Pune) and Jyoti Prakash Salvekar (70, Nagpur) beside serving principal Dilip Narayandas Seth (53, SP College, Tilak Road, Pune) and senior clerk Mohini Dattaraya Joshi (40, Sheetalbaug Complex, Gavane Vasti, Pune) were the accused who were released on personal bond.
"Inspector of Social Welfare Department Subhash Salunke had filed a case against SP College in 2012. We have unearthed details of the case since three years and today we arrested them," Vishrambaug police station inspector Rajendra Sawant said.
The Maharashtra State Social Justice Department had directed colleges not to collect fees from SC/ST students and also warned about stringent action against mischievous colleges.
When Social Welfare Department officers checked SP College's record, they found that the college administration had collected Rs 29,31,500 from 163 SC/ST students in the period between 2006-2007 to 2011-2012.
The trustee of SP College could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
