A heritage walk, aimed at creating awareness among the people for conserving and protecting historical monuments and sites, was organised today at Akhnoor, 30 kms from here.
The walk, organised by the Jammu and Kashmir unit of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), started from the ancient Buddhist site of Ambaran and culminated at Akhnoor Fort.
Minister for PHE, Irrigation and flood Control, Sham Lal Sharma, who flagged off the event, said "several important religious places of ancient times still exist in and around the town and people from different parts of the country visit these places throughout the year".
He said that with the earnest efforts of the state government, Akhnoor town has been brought on the national tourist map.
"Efforts are afoot to include the newly discovered Buddhist ancient site on the world tourist map to attract tourists from different parts of the world to visit this historical place," Sharma said.
The efforts were coupled with the visit of the Buddhist spiritual leader Dalai Lama to the site about two years ago,he added.
Every Year the World Heritage Day is being observed on April 18 with an objective to create awareness among the common people for conserving and protecting the valuable asset and cultural heritage across the world.
