Assam house passes bills to set up universities

Assam Assembly today passed by voice vote six bills to set up four universities, and amending four existing bills pertaining to two other universities.
One of the bills was Battadev University Bill, 2017 which would facilitate by upgrading the existing Bajali College in Barpeta district in honour of scholar and first Assamese story writer Baikunthanath Bhattacharya.
Other bills would pave the way to upgrade existing Madhavdev College in Lakhimpur district to Madhavdev University and Rabindranath Tagore University would be set up by upgrading Hojai College in Hojai district.
The Majuli University of Culture Bill was to establish and constitute a teaching and affiliating university in the world's largest river island Majuli in the state.
The new Assam Employees' Parents Responsibility and Norms for Accountability and Monitoring Bill, 2017 or The Assam Employees PRONAM Bill, 2017 is to provide for accountability for state government employees in taking care of their parents and disabled siblings.
The Assam State Capital Region Development Authority bill was passed for establishment of a regional authority for preparation of a regional plan for rapid development of the Assam State Capital Region.
The amendment of Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University (Amendment) Bill 2017 is for handing over the conduct of examinations, prescribing of syllabus, books of Sanskrit and Pali education to the University from Assam Sanskrit Board.
The Assam Science and Technology University (Amendment) Bill, 2017 proposed that the state Governor be made its Chancellor instead of the Chief Minister.
Amendment was also brought to the Assam Municipal Bill for a dedicated cadre for municipal administration, while the Industrial Disputes (Assam Amendment) Bill, 2017 is for amending the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.
