Ten Central American migrants are recovering from wounds suffered in an attack on the freight train they were riding in southern Mexico.
The mainly Honduran migrants had hopped the train to cross Mexico to reach the United States.
Migrants told rights activist Tomas Gonzalez Castillo they were attacked with guns and machetes, and some jumped from the train to escape.
Gonzalez Castillo said today the attackers reportedly belonged to local criminal gangs.
The government of the Gulf coast state of Veracruz said nine of the 10 had been treated at local hospitals and released.
The government said the attackers also were Hondurans, and were trying to extort protection money from those aboard the train.
Mexican drug gangs often recruit Central Americans to prey on their countrymen.
