AU allows expelled students to appear in exams amid protests

The Allahabad University administration today decided to allow three students union leaders, expelled recently on disciplinary grounds, to "provisionally" appear in examinations commencing from tomorrow.
According to the University's Public Relations Officer P K Sahoo, varsity officials held an emergency meeting this afternoon where it was decided that "these students be given an opportunity to appear in examinations provisionally," even as supporters of the rusticated students continued with their agitation to press for the withdrawal of their expulsion.
"The declaration of results and further course of action regarding expulsion from the University of these students will be subject to the decision of statutory bodies/Executive Council," Sahoo said.

The president of the Allahabad University Students Union Dinesh Yadav and his associates Ajeet Yadav and Avinash Dubey were expelled on February 6 this year, four days after they had barged into the office of the Vice-Chancellor in protest against alleged "irregularities" in granting admissions to research scholars, and allegedly assaulted staff members who prevented them from entering the V-C's chamber.
The expulsions have caused much resentment among a section of students who had been forcing closure of all the counters in the varsity campus since Friday when Ajeet Yadav and Avinash Dubey had also attempted self-immolation.
The agitators also locked the Chief Proctor Mata Amber Tiwari inside his office on Saturday and he could be freed only late in the night, after about eight hours, following police intervention.

Notwithstanding heavy deployment of police around the University premises, the agitators continued with their protests today and forced the closure of counters much to the discomfort of students who had turned up to get their admit cards and other necessary documents.
