A committee, comprising Union Minority Affairs department Secretary Rakesh Garg, Joint Secretaries Dev Varman and Jan E Alam, suggested Jamal's name from a list of five others, said Ali Ahmad Khan, the incumbent secretary of the Central Waqf Council, in a statement.
K T Jaleel, Kerala minister for Welfare of Minorities, Wakf and Haj Pilgrimage, expressed happiness over the appointment of a Keralite to the post, which is a first in the history of the Council since its establishment in 1964.
Central Waqf Council is a statutory body established for the purpose of advising the Central Government, the State Governments and the Waqf boards on matters concerning the working of the State Waqf Boards and due administration of the Waqf.
Jamal was a member of the steering committees of various Central government schemes like modernisation of the state Waqf Boards and its empowerment.
