The deceased identified as Alisha Shaikh aged one-year-and-three-months was travelling on the motorcycle of Razak Sheikh (42) and was in the arms of her aunt Rizwana, said police.
The motorcycle skidded while moving over a speed- breaker and the baby slipped out of the hands of Rizwana and fell on the road, said police, adding at the same time a dumper was crossing the road and the child was badly injured after it hit her.
Crowd gathered after the accident and staged protests demanding arrest of the driver as they thought that the dumper had hit the girl, senior inspector of Deonar police station Dattatreya Shinde said.
Police added that they resorted to mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
The driver of dumper is detained at Deonar Police Station.
