A former IAS officer was today granted bail by a Delhi court in a criminal case of cheating and other charges lodged by his ex-wife Vimla Mehra, director general of Tihar Jail.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Raj Kumar Tripathi granted bail to former MCD commissioner K S Mehra on furnishing of a personal bond of Rs 50,000 with one security of the like amount.
Police have registered a case under section 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of Indian Penal Code against Mehra for allegedly duping Vimla, then his wife, on the pretext of buying a flat.
While enlarging Mehra on bail the court asked him to remain present before it on each date of hearing. The next hearing will be on May 4.
Manoj Gorkela, the counsel for Vimla, an IPS officer who succeeded Neeraj Kumar and became the second woman director general of Tihar Jail, alleged that her former husband, duped her on the pretext of buying flats. The couple separated many years ago.
Gorkela said, Vimla was induced by Mehra to contribute Rs 1.4 lakh to purchase a flat in Patparganj in East Delhi, saying she will be the co-owner of the flat.
"The documents related to the purchase is under my (Vimla's) possession. Now, it was learnt that Mehra has converted the property from lease to freehold from DDA exclusively in his name by disassociating my name from joint ownership," Vimla said in her complaint.
The IPS officer had filed a complaint to the economic offences wing of Delhi Police on August 27, 2012. She had alleged that she also paid Rs 2.3 lakh in 1997 to buy a flat in Noida to Mehra for co-ownership of the property. But later, it was found that the flat is solely in the name of Mehra.
Mehra has denied the allegations against him.
