The Bangladesh government is very serious about the issue and had taken a number of 'relevant' steps in this regard, Islam told PTI here last evening.

She said that India is one of Bangladesh's "best friends" and that people in her country always remember the help extended by India during Bangladesh's independence struggle in 1971.

Islam, who was in Silchar to attend a meeting organised by the Indo-Bangla Friendship Society, said there was a lot of scope to develop trade and commerce with India, specially with Northeastern states.

She also said that India and Bangladesh had agreed to reform their visa policies and an agreement in this regard is likely to be signed in January, 2013.

The Indian Home Minister is likely to visit Bangladesh next January and an agreement in this regard may be signed then, she said.

She also promised to "seriously consider" establishing a Bangladesh Information Center at Silchar.
