In view of the increase in use of Bangladesh mobile phone services by militants operating in Meghalaya, the state government today requested the Bangladesh authorities to take measures to prevent signals from spilling over to Indian territory.
This issue is one among the six proposals flagged during the two-day Bilateral Conference between the DCs/DMs of Meghalaya and Bangladesh held here.
"We have requested the deputy commissioners of the respective bordering districts (Bangladesh) to have a meeting with the telecom operators having their mobile towers in the border areas to look into matter," Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District Sanjay Goyal told PTI.
According to him, the use of Bangladesh sim cards in Indian territory is a major concern.
Goyal said, "There are technologies which can reduce the strength of the signals or can refocus the signals on a certain side.
"This is in view of the use of Bangladesh sim cards by the miscreants and militants," he said.
He said, "Bangladesh officials have agreed to take up the matter with their government and gave the assurance that they will definitely look into the issue.
