A Bangladeshi barge sank in the Hooghly river on Thursday after hitting a dispatch vessel of the Kolkata Port, officials said.

The incident occurred at Akra, near Budge Budge, in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, they added.

"The barge came in the wrong navigation channel and hit our dispatch vessel," Kolkata Port Trust spokesperson Sanjay Mukherjee said.

The dispatch vessel was also damaged, he added.

An enquiry was ordered into the incident, Mukherjee said.
