The Press Council of India today urged newspapers to be cautious while publishing advertisements for overseas job vacancies as people often get cheated, and it warned of action for failing to adhere to its guidelines on the issue.
The Council said in 2003 it had issued guidelines for newspapers publishing such advertisements which tend to cheat people following a request from the Protector General of Emigration.
But as advertisements continued to be published unabated, the Protector General once against approached PCI. Following the request, the Council has reiterated its guidelines for publishing such ads.
"The Council hopes that the print media will strictly adhere to the guidelines while accepting such advertisements for overseas job vacancies so as to protect the public from being misled to avoid action by the Council," it said.
