: Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today issued on the spot orders to PWD to demolish the dilapidated vacant government staff quarters in neighbouring Lawspet after pedalling through the entire area to see their poor condition.
A release from the Lt Governor's office said Bedi pedalled through the quarters covering all blocks to see for herself the poor maintenance.
Asking the PWD Chief Engineer to earmark separate funds to maintain the quarters, Bedi also directed that the PWD Junior Engineer be available from 10 AM to 12 noon on all working days to receive complaints from residents.
Addressing residents of the quarters at a meeting, she suggested that a Residents Welfare Association be formed with the patrons being the Revenue minister, elected from Lawspet, and Secretary to Lt Governor.
She said the residents should volunteer to clean the complex and added that a drive against garbage would be launched on December 17.
The Lt Governor also asked the residents to become aware of segregation of solid waste at source.

Other suggestions for a face lift to the quarters included filling potholes, construction of community toilets and regular patrolling in the locality.
