The show, which was executive produced by Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman and dealt with issues like domestic abuse, divorce, ageing, child-rearing struggles, was named the outstanding limited series at the ceremony and beat out other contenders for the award, including "Fargo", "Feud: Bette & Joan", "Genius" and "The Night Of".
Kidman took home the award for the outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie for her role of an abused housewife, Celeste Wright, on the seven-episode series adapted from the Liane Moriarty novel.
"Reese, I share this with you. Without you, I would not be standing up here. Thank you to the Television Academy for recognizing our show, for recognizing this performance," she said.
Skarsgard, who played Kidman's on-screen husband, Perry Wright, on the HBO miniseries, received the outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie trophy for his terrifying performance.
"Thank you for making this boy feel like one of the girls. Speaking of incredible women, I want to thank my mother who flew out all the way from Stockholm, Sweden to be here tonight... Oh and thanks for giving birth to me, that was pretty cool," Skarsgard said.
"I've been acting since I was 11 years old and I think I've worked with maybe 12 women, so I just want to thank the Television Academy for honouring our show and working with this incredible tribe of fierce women. Thanks to Liane Moriarty for writing these vulnerable flowers like Renata," Dern said.
Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallee also won his first Emmy for the "Big Little Lies" in the outstanding directing for a limited series, movie or dramatic special section.
"I'm indebted to many people," he said, listing Steve Zaillian, the show's creator, director and executive producer, and writer Richard Price, among others.
"I want to say it is always strange reaping the rewards of a story based on real-world suffering, but if this show has shown a light on some of the prejudice in our societies, some of the injustice in our justice system, then maybe that is something," he added.
