BJP today opened its account in Manipur Assembly by winning bypolls in two constituencies, while Congress and Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) won Assembly by-elections in Mizoram and Meghalaya respectively.
BJP won the bypolls in Thangmeiband and Thongju in Manipur. Congress emerged victorious in Aizawl North-III Assembly seat and HSPDP retained Nongstoin Assembly seat in Meghalaya.
In Manipur, BJP trounced ruling Congress in both the seats.
Kh Joykishan Singh of BJP won Thangmeiband Assembly seat by securing 12,098 votes against Jyotin Waikhom of Congress who got 10,195 votes.
BJP's Th Bishwajit Singh won Thongju Assembly seat defeating Bijoy Koijam of Congress. Singh bagged 14,605 votes while the Congress candidate got 11,393 votes, the election office said.
In Mizoram, Lal Thanzara, Congress candidate and younger brother of Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, won Aizawl North-III Assembly seat.
Lal Thanzara, the former health minister who had resigned in August necessitating the by-election, got more votes than the total number of votes polled by Mizo National Front candidate K Vanlalvena and NDA nominee Lalduhawma.
Lal Thanzara bagged 6,175 votes followed by Vanlalvena who got 2,790 votes while the NDA candidate secured 1887 votes.
In Meghalaya, opposition HSPDP retained the Nongstoin Assembly seat defeating ruling Congress candidate by a margin of over 2700 votes in November 21 bypoll.
This is the second defeat for the ruling Congress in a span of one month when it lost badly in the Garo Tribal Council election last month.
HSPDP candidate Diostar Jyndiang won the by-election by a margin of over 2,763 votes trouncing Congress candidate Gabriel Wahlang to retain the seat held by its former president.
While Jyndiang secured 11,179 votes, Congress candidate got 8416 votes.
