The BJP today said it will oppose any proposal of the Punjab government to put financial burden on the people of the state by imposing additional taxes.
"The party will oppose any proposal to levy additional taxes on the people of Punjab by the ruling Congress government," BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh said in a statement here.
Quoting media reports suggesting levy of new taxes to mop up revenue by the state government, Chugh slammed the Amarinder Singh-led dispensation for burdening people with new levies "in bid to honour the unrealistic promises made during the run up to the Punjab elections".
"The Congress led by Amarinder Singh promised moon to the people of the state while it knew that the promises were unrealistic and could not be delivered. In order to wrest power, the Congress became so desperate that they defied all logic and came out with a manifesto which was termed 'a bundle of lies' by both the BJP and the SAD both," he said.
He said the NDA government at the Centre has introduced the GST in order to bring a uniform tax structure with the consent of all state government but the Punjab government is trying to go against the spirit of the new tax regime and termed it a "clear betrayal" with the people who trusted them (Congress) the time of elections".
Chugh said the state government goes ahead and levies new taxes, these will affect the poor and the middle class.
