DMK today alleged that BJP was trying to rake up the Cauvery and Ramjanma Bhoomi issues apparently for electoral benefits in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.
Party President M Karunanidhi alleged that BJP "which is the ruling party at Centre" was "making moves against Tamil Nadu" on the Cauvery issue despite court directive to the Union government on setting up the Cauvery Management Board.
"Instead of reigning in Karnataka government which is denying water to Tamil Nadu as per tribunal order, (the Centre) has suddenly declined to constitute the CMB although the Supreme Court has directed it. BJP somehow wants to win the Karnataka elections (in 2018)," he said.
Centre had recently sought modification to a Supreme Court directive asking it to constitute the CMB, drawing widespread criticism in Tamil Nadu.
"Similarly, there are reports that BJP is trying to rake up the Ramjanma Bhoomi issue to garner Hindu votes in Uttar Pradesh (where polls are due next year)," Karunanidhi said in a statement.
Karunanidhi also took exception to Prime Minister Narendra Modi chanting 'Jai Sri Ram' at a Ram Leela event in Lucknow last week.
The DMK President, who had earlier courted controversy with his critical comments about Lord Ram made at the height of the Ramasethu controversy, also criticised the move to set up a Ramayana museum near Ayodhya.
