Association of Indian Universities (AIU) today sought urgent revisit of the three-decade old higher education policy in view the changes happening in the sector.
When the policy was formulated in 1986, there was no Information Technology, internet, computers and smart class and now with all the facilities at the finger tip, there was the immediate need to revisit and revamp the policy, AIU Secretary General Prof.Furqan Qamar told reporters here.
It should not be a change for the sake of change, but a thorough reconstruction of present policy, by which the students across the country should be benefited, he said.
Similarly education should be considered a priority sector and more funds allocated for infrastructure and development of other facilities in colleges and universities, he said.
Qamar, participating in a seminar "internatinalisation of higher Education," organised at Avinashilingam University for Women, said the number of universities and colleges had increased from 20 and 500 respectively at the time of independence to 800 and 40,000 at present.
The number of students had also risen from one lakh to 3.5 crore. Considering this, the government should come forward to allocate more funds to the sector for upgrading the quality and also increase the number of faculty in every discipline, he said.
