Bollywood celebrities such as Rishi Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Raveena Tandon have hailed the Supreme Court's verdict awarding the death sentence to four men convicted in the December 16, 2012, gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old woman.
Rishi tweeted, "Nirbhaya verdict. Justice prevails. Being in a civil society, in this case, 'Public hanging' was needed to set an example for an everyday menace."
Varun wrote, "Even hanging the four criminals is not enough justice but it should serve as a reminder that how India deals with this crime #Nirbhayaverdict (sic)"
Raveena posted her own picture with the victim's mother, and tweeted, "May her tears flow no more...May the mother's daughter finally rest in peace...May all evil know there is a price to pay."
Simi Garewal tweeted, "#Nirbhaya Hail to the Solomons of the SC! Only regret is the evil one got away...Rewarded with a new identity, money to start a new life", she said in an apparent reference to a fifth convict, who was a juvenile when he committed the crime.
Actress Dia Mirza said, "Justice has been delivered in the #NirbhayaCase. I hope that this verdict serves as a deterrent to the monsters in our society..."
Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha said he did not endorse the death penalty, but believed that this "heinous rape" was an exception.
The apex court today confirmed the sentence saying it had sent a "tsunami of shock" all over and was a "rarest of rare" case in which the most brutal, barbaric and diabolical attack was carried out on the victim.
