A case of cheating was today registered in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh against a bridegroom and four of his relatives after they fled with over Rs 1 lakh and 40 grams of gold ornaments given in dowry a day before the marriage.
The incident took place in Varadaiahpalem mandal.
Accused Raja Ram and his relatives did not turn up for the marriage which was to take place early today.
They had demanded Rs 3 lakh and gold ornaments, however the girl's family had agreed to pay Rs 1.5 lakh, police sub-inspector Vamsidhar said.
Raja Ram's family eventually accepted Rs 1 lakh in cash, 40 grams of gold ornaments and dress material worth Rs 10,000. But they could not be traced since yesterday.
As they did not turn up for marriage today, case of cheating under IPC, as well as offence under the Dowry Prohibition Act, was filed. Police have launched a manhunt for them.
Police, however, denied the reports that the bride attempted suicide after the incident.
