Broadband via Bangladesh to improve Net speed in NE states

Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today said the proposed international Internet gateway, which will provide broadband connectivity to North-east with the help of Bangladesh, would improve the quality of service in the region.
Unveiling the plaque for International Gateway for Internet Service, in presence of Governor Tathagata Roy and Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Prasad said it was a classical example of cooperation from Bangladesh to allow BSNL to use 10 GB from its unspent submarine cable at Cox's Bazaar in Bangladesh.
The international gateway for broadband connectivity is being set up here in which connectivity will be provided through Bangladesh under an agreement between state-run BSNL and Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company.

Now Tripura and other North Eastern states would get the internet speed on par with Delhi or Chennai, he informed hailing Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for having "agreed to give us to use their bandwidth during our Prime Minister's visit to Bangladesh recently."
As part of the arrangement, BSNL would pay Rs 7.2 crore to Bangladesh annually.
The Union minister said improvement of the north eastern region is central to the government of India as rightly referred by the Prime Minister that "India could not develop without the development of the region."

After the connectivity is extended up to Akhaura in Bangladesh, bordering the capital city, entire North-East region would be benefitted in terms of broadband connectivity, he said.

BSNL has already taken up works to lay the underground cable up to Akhaura while the remaining part would be done by Bangladesh.
BSNL officials said it would take five to six months to have the connectivity from Cox's Bazaar's submarine cable.
At present, the state is having problem with the internet facility as it depends on submarine cable in Chennai.
The Tripura Chief Minister has asked BSNL authorities to be cautious regarding the quality of so that it could attain world class quality.
