Power major BSES has started accepting complaints of power theft on WhatsApp.
Consumers can now shoot videos and take photos of evidence of power theft and send them to centralised numbers, along with location details, through the Internet messaging service.
The service is primarily targeted at areas with a high rate of power theft, BSES said in a statement, adding that the identity of the complainant will be kept confidential.
"BSES consumers can send power theft videos on the following numbers: BRPL (south and west Delhi) 9555010022, BYPL (east and central Delhi) 8588892156," the company said.
BSES maintains that power theft not only results in revenue loss, but is also a major factor behind trippings and local breakdowns.
"Efforts of discom enforcement teams to check the irregularities are thwarted by organised gangs on many occasions. Whenever the teams reach these areas, these gangs gherao them and do not let them inspect," a spokesperson said.
There are areas in Najafgargh, Jaffarpur, Mundka, Nangloi, Seelampur, Nand Nagari, Yamuna Vihar, Karawal Nagar and Shaheen Bagh where power theft continues to be a cause of concern, he added.
