Delhi govt allocates Rs 5,500 crore for public transport

Delhi government proposed to allocate Rs 5,506 crore for public transport, including road infrastructure projects, in its annual budget.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will also be given Rs 1,156 crore in the next financial year.

"The work of Metro Phase IV will start in 2017-18 and be completed by December 2021. We have proposed to procure 582 additional metro coach to facilitate the passengers of commuters. I propose an amount of Rs 1,156 crore for DMRC in 2017-18," Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said while presenting the budget in Delhi Assembly.

He said the government has also proposed to add 736 buses under cluster scheme during 2017-18.

Construction of elevated road over Barapullah Nallah Phase -III from Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar will be completed this year, for which, the government proposes to allocate Rs 150 crore in the budget, Sisodia said.

Rs 100 crore has also been set aside for development of bus terminals and depots in the national capital.

"I propose total expenditure of Rs 5506 crore for public transport including road infrastructure in 2017-18. This includes revenue budget of Rs 3,512 crore and capital budget of Rs 1,994 crore.

"An amount of Rs 3056 crore is earmarked for implementation of various schemes, programmes and projects under transport sector," he said.

Besides, Sisodia also said to ensure safety of pedestrians at ITO, the government also proposed to construct sky walk and Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at the junction of Sikandra Road, Mathura Road, Tilak Marg and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg at W-point and near Hans Bhawan with an estimated cost of Rs 54.84 crore.
