Bypoll to RS seat vacated by Heptulla on Oct 17: EC

Bypoll to the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by Najma Heptulla, after she was appointed Governor of Manipur, will take place on October 17, the Election Commission said today.
Heptulla had resigned from the Union Cabinet as Minority Affairs Minister in July, days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had rejigged his Council of Ministers.
Later, she was appointed as Governor of Manipur following which she resigned from the Upper house on August 20. Her term as a Rajya Sabha member was, otherwise, to end on April 2, 2018. She was a member from Madhya Pradesh.
The poll as well as counting will take place on October 17, EC said.

The Commission also announced another bypoll--to a vacancy in the Telangana Legislative Council due to the resignation of Rummala Nageswara Rao on May 23. The term of his office would have been up to June 3, 2021.
The bypoll to this Council seat will also take place on October 17.
