"The incident came to light this morning in Janjgiri village under Anda police station, 20 km from Durg town," Additional Superintendent of Police Prashant Thakur told PTI.
Devnarayan Deshmukh killed his mother Jhamin Bai (52), wife Pushpa Bai (35) and children Kavita (10), Benu (7) and Devendra (5) by smashing their heads with a hammer, the ASP said. Then he hanged himself from the ceiling of the house.
"The cause behind the incident is yet to be ascertained," the ASP added.
Gyan Singh immediately informed his nephew Rajkumar, who lives in the same village, and the latter rushed to the house and entered by breaking down the door. Inside, he found Devnarayan hanging from ceiling and other family members lying in pools of blood.
Devnarayan was reported to be recovering from a mental illness, the ASP said.
