Cab operators in U'khand end stir

Cab operators across Uttarakhand ended their strike this evening following an assurance from the state government that the Anti Lock Breaking System will not apply to vehicles already registered.
"We withdrew our strike this evening after a delegation headed by our president Sanjay Shastri was assured by the chief minister that the mandatory ABS will not be applicable to vehicles already registered," Maxi Cab Mahasangh General Secretary Satyadev Uniyal said.
The ABS will be compulsory only for new vehicles which apply for registration now and arrangements will also be made for their installation in them by the manufacturers, Uniyal who was part of the delegation said.

About 35,000 cab operators in Uttarakhand were on strike since Saturday in protest against the ABS being made mandatory causing great inconvenience to commuters.
Striking cab operators kept their vehicles off the roads and held demonstrations against the move at a number of places over the past three days causing inconvenience to passengers and prompting Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna to ask them to end their stir in public interest especially in the hill areas.
Though the move was aimed to curb recurrence of road accidents especially in the hills, cab operators were protesting saying it was made mandatory without adequate prior preparations.

It was not clear where this system was to be installed in the vehicles and how, Uniyal said.
Orders for the renewal of permits of the old vehicles, one of the major demands of the striking cab operators have also been given, the chief minister said.
