Campaigning for Northern Angami bypoll ends

Campaigning for the by-election to Northern Angami-I assembly constituency in Kohima district from where former chief minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu is contesting came to an end this evening.
The by-election scheduled for July 29 will be straight fight between Liezietsu who is Naga Peoople's Front (NPF) nominee and educationist turn politician Kekhrie Yhome who is an Independent candidate.
The by-poll was necessitated after sitting MLA Khriehu Liezietsu resigned on May 24 last, so that his father Shurhozelie Liezietsu could get elected as regular member of the state Assembly.
A total of 16,235 voters, which include 7697 male and 8538 female will exercise their franchise in 25 polling stations spread across eight areas, said Chief Electoral Officer, Abhijit Sinha while briefing media-persons this evening.

The CEO said all arrangements have been made besides the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and for the first time Voters Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) Machine would also be used during the polls.
Sinha said three companies of Central Armed Police Forces will be deployed in every polling station to ensure peaceful conduct of election.
The CEO also informed that campaigning has come to an end at 4 pm this evening while exit polls have also been prohibited till the polling is over.
Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Rajesh Soundararajan, who is also the Returning Officer for the by-poll said the administration has completed all preparedness for the smooth conduct of the bye-polls.
