Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is brushing up his cycling skills ahead of capital's first Car-Free Day, which will also witness a bicycle rally from Red Fort to India Gate, the stretch that will be devoid of all private vehicles.
Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai said that the Chief Minister, other Cabinet ministers and MLAs will participate in the cycle rally which will begin at 7 AM and terminate at Bhagwan Dass Marg parking on October 22.
"The Chief Minister is practising to participate in the cycle rally," the minister said.
Car-Free Day will be observed from 7 AM to 12 noon on the stretch connecting Red Fort to India Gate via Delhi Gate and ITO. Additional buses of DTC with frequency of one or two minutes will be deployed on this route for better facilitation of commuters.
The Minister said that some auto drivers will provide free service to support the Car-Free Day, adding that comprehensive pollution drive has been started wherein 693 pollution checking centres have been connected with on-line server which will update the PUC certification issuance on real time basis.
"In the next three months, CCTV cameras will also be installed at a few locations on pilot basis to identify the vehicles which have not obtained the PUC certificates," Rai told reporters here.
He said that DTC has also given a work order for automatic fare collection system by a tender process and the technology provider has already started the work.
