The carcasses of two elephants were found by forest officials in the district today, police said.
They said the carcass of a one-and-a-half-year old bull elephant was found in a nearby slushy area.
Veterinarians conducted a postmortem and buried the animal near the spot.
A 15-year-old cow elephant died after it slipped and fell off a rocky outcrop at Gudalur in Nilgiris district,they said.
The elephant had strayed into the town last night, damaged a wall and fell to a depth of 30 feet, resulting in fatal injuries, police said.
