Celebrations broke out at the house of Punjab cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu here after the Supreme Court spared him a jail term in the 1988 road rage case.
Sweets were distributed at his residence located on the outskirts of the city at Holy City colony. Sidhu's wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu, daughter Rabia Sidhu, friends and relatives offered sweets to each other and danced to the beating of drums.
"The justice has been done. My father is an honest and innocent man. He could never hurt anybody as he is very kind hearted and humble," Sidhu's daughter Rabia said.
The Supreme Court today convicted Sidhu for voluntarily hurting a 65-year-old man but spared him a jail term.
A bench of Justices J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul reversed the findings of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had convicted the cricketer-turned-politician for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and had sentenced him to three years in jail.
The Supreme Court bench imposed a Rs 1,000-fine on the cricketer-turned-politician.
