With the successful implementation of the MGNREGA project in West Bengal, the Modi government is keen on showcasing the state as a model state, according to the state's Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee.
"The centre is happy with the performance in implenting MGNREGA project in West Bengal. It wants to showcase Bengal as a model state," Mukherjee told reporters here after his meeting with a visiting central delegation.
He claimed to have been able to provide benefits to the people and in turn helping expedite progress in the rural belt.
Emerging from a meeting with the central delegation, Mukherjee said that representatives of eight states would visit Bengal next November to have a first-hand experience of the successful MGNREGA project.
The minister said that Aadhaar card should not pose any threat to the villagers in getting jobs under the MGNREGA project.
State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier said that she would write to the centre asking it not to make Aadhaar cards mandatory for those working under the MNREGA scheme.
The state government was opposed to making Aadhaar a must for labourers as it was estimated that only about 70 per cent of them possessed Aadhaar cards.
The Chief Minister would soon write to the central government requesting it not to make Aadhaar card compulsory till its registration was 100 per cent complete, officials in the state secretariat said.
