Main Opposition Congress today staged a walkout in the Chhattisgarh Assembly to express their dissatisfaction over Home Minster's reply over rising crimes against women following poor law and order situation in the state.
Raising the issue through a call attention notice, Congress members Tezkunwar Netam and Anila Bhediya noted that there is an unprecedented rise in cases of sexual abuse and kidnapping of women in the state and nobody was listening to their woes.
Drawing the attention of the House towards a rape case in Rajnandaon district last year, Netam alleged, "a woman who was raped by a youth in Chorpani village under Ambagarh Chowki police station limits of Rajnandgaon district on December 16 last year had committed suicide because the police allegedly embarrassed her and refused to register a case.
She alleged that policemen at Ambagarh Chowki police station refused to lodge her complaint when she reached there on December 18 following which she committed suicide by hanging herself a day after.
In his reply, Home Minister Ramsewak Paikra said that after the victim complained of rape and subsequently ended her life, her son had lodged a complaint in this connection following which the accused was arrested and produced before a local court.
Besides, a complaint was also received against the Assistant Sub Inspector Harinarayan Rajput who posted at Ambagarh Chowki for not registering the rape complaint following which he was suspended and departmental enquiry was ordered against him, the HM said.
The Minister asserted that it is inappropriate to say that government is unconcerned towards the safety of women.
Unsatisfied with his reply, Tezkunwar Netam and Anila Bhediya said a woman lost her life due to insensitive approach of a policeman.
Crime against women is on rise and law and order situation is deteriorating in the state.
Supporting them on the issue, the Leader of Opposition T S Singhdeo and senior Congress MLA Satyanarayan Sharma blamed the government for increasing crime against women.
Later, Opposition members staged walk out from the House.
