Tong Mingqian, the senior political advisor in central Hunan Province, has been removed from his post, the party's organisation department said.
The term "disciplinary violations" is usually used by the party to refer to graft charges.
Tong had served as vice chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Authorities are investigating his case according to procedure, said a statement of the Organisation Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, also the General Secretary of the Communist Party, has vowed to root out corruption since coming to power last year.
Recently, top party leader Bo Xilai was sentenced to life imprisonment for bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power.
