Moving a private member's resolution, T Subbarami Reddy (Cong) urged the government to take urgent measures in this regard and bring forward reforms in the power sector so as to provide electricity to consumers at cheap rates.
Reddy spoke about the need to increase coal supply to meet the needs of power producers.
He also spoke about allowing import of quality coal from abroad as a short term measure to meet the present shortage and for full capacity utilisation by major power plants.
Power Minister Piyush Goyal also urged the Chair to allow him more time to speak on the issue as the matter was of concern to the entire nation.
Sensing the mood of the House, the Chair agreed to continue with the discussion next time before the House was adjourned for the day.
