The Congress today said no attempt should be made to take political mileage from the 'triple talaq' issue, noting the matter was sub-judice.
Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the Congress party stood by its commitment towards women empowerment and equality for women and would abide by the Supreme Court verdict in the case.
"The Congress has always been in the forefront of gender reforms... The Congress has always stood for gender justice for Muslim women.
"The Supreme Court is seized of the matter. The matter is sub-judice. There is no reason to preempt it, influence it, overpower it or sensationalise the verdict. There should not be any attempt to derive political capital from it," he said.
Singhvi said late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru waged a war against his own party to bring about changes in family law with Vallabhai Patel joining and backing him in doing so.
He said even the previous Congress government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave greater rights to women.
