Punjab Congress Legislature Party leader Charanjit Singh Channi today demanded a Punjab and Haryana High Court-monitored probe into the proliferation of criminals gangs in the state.
Addressing a gathering at the Shaheedi Jor Mela at village Thatta, Channi said that Director General of Police (DGP) Suresh Arora himself had admitted the existence of 55 gangs in the state with 423 members among whom, more than 100 were operating from the prisons.
He alleged that these gangs had proliferated under "direct political patronage" as pictures of several of them had appeared in sections of the media with senior Akali Dal leaders.
Prisons were rather safe havens for these anti-social elements, he alleged.
