A senior Punjab Congress leader was today allegedly tried to stop the carcade of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and run over his securitymen, a senior official said.
Chairman of Congress' Kisan wing and former MLA Inderjit Singh Zira allegedly tried to breach the security of the CM's carcade, while he was on his way to attend the ongoing budget session.
Zira was stopped by the chief minister's escort, but later the Congress leader allegedly tried to run over his vehicle on the commandos deployed in Badal's security, police said, adding that on complaint of one of the security personnel a case was registered against him.
Zira, protesting outside the Assembly for the last four days, was booked in a case of attempt to murder and obstructing public servant from performing duty, police said.
Later, he was hospitalised after he claimed of acute chest pain.
Meanwhile, Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa and Indian Youth Congress president and Gidderbaha MLA Raja Amrinder Singh Raja Warring strongly condemned the police action against the Congress leader.
Zira had been protesting against the amendment to the Land Acquisition Act outside Punjab Legislative Assembly for the last four days.
Bajwa, in a statement here, said in the process, the ex-MLA had demonstrated in front of the car of Badal.
"This action of police amounted to throttling democracy and smacked of dictatorial tendencies," he added.
Meanwhile, Warring described the police action as murder of democracy.
"Zira was peacefully protesting against the land acquisition bill along with his supporters when the Chandigarh police roughed him up and registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC," he said.
Warring said this act was "undemocratic" as Zira wanted to meet the Chief Minister for the cause of farmers of Punjab, but Badal's security persons manhandled him.
