Congress staged dharnas across Uttar Pradesh today to protest the police lathicharge on party workers in the state capital on Monday, and submitted memorandum addressed to the Governor seeking action against erring policemen as part of "Daman Virodhi Diwas (Anti-Oppression Day)".
Congress workers held protest demonstrations at all the district headquarters and submitted memorandum addressed to the Governor through respective District Magistrates condemning the "barbaric" lathicharge and demanding stern action against the policemen responsible, Congress spokesman Satyadev Triapthi said.
To give a further momentum to the protest, the respective district unit presidents have been directed to burn effigies of the government at the tehsil headquarters between August 21 and 26, he said.
A meeting has been convened here on August 27 of district and city unit presidents in which senior leaders like AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry and UPCC president Nirmal Khatri will take stock of the protest programme at the tehsil headquarters, Tripathi said, adding that deliberations will also be held for chalking out future strategy.
Tripathi said police have booked leaders for holding protest on issues relating to people's interest and this is condemnable.
"We also went to lodge complaint against the policemen responsible for lathicharge but it was not accepted," Tripathi claimed.
Several Congress men including Mistry, Khatri and former Union minister Pradip Jain Aditya were injured in police lathicharge on Monday when they tried to march towards the Assembly as part of the 'Vidhan Sabha Gherao' programme.
The party had stalled proceedings of both the houses of the state legislature over the issue yesterday and demanded a judicial probe into the incident.
