The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee today expressed concern over Governor P B Acharya's alleged attempt to encroach upon the state's administrative powers.
It has also urged the leader of Congress Legislature Party to take up the matter with President Pranab Mukherjee.
"The Governor is unnecessarily attempting to encroach upon the administrative powers of the state government. These actions are a threat to the democratic practises, as enshrined in the Constitution," APCC President Anjan Dutta said.
Dutta's statement was in reaction to the Governor's asking the state forest minister to step down if rhino poaching could not be stopped.
The Governor later called the officials of Forest Department at his residence to brief him about the shortcomings in the protection of rhinos and reportedly said that all should resign if they could not stop poaching.
The APCC urged the leader of the Congress Legislature Party to examine the recent media statements of the Governor and take up the matter with the President and seek his intervention to restrain him under the provisions of the Constitution.
Dutta pointed out that as known to all, the boundaries of Kaziranga, Manas and Pobitora wildlife areas were not fenced and hence total domination over the wicked poachers could not be achieved from time immemorial.
The Governor was not available for comment as he had left for Imphal this morning, as told by the Governor's office when contacted.
