Congressman among 7 booked for inciting mob in Goa village

The Goa police have registered an offence against seven people, including a Congress leader, for allegedly inciting a mob at a village near here, an official said Thursday.

The incident took place in Shiroda village, 40km from here, Sunday.

Around 200 people had gathered in front of a shop in the village, accusing its operator of clicking pictures of traffic offenders and providing them to the police, who eventually fined them.

The mob had attacked the shop after being incited by a group of people, police have said.

A senior police officer said a complaint was lodged by one Ramanuj Gupta, who was managing the shop when the mob attacked it.

Gupta has claimed the mob forcibly evicted him from the shop, he said.

Based on the complaint, an FIR was filed against seven people, including Diya Shetkar, a local Congress leader, under IPC sections related to inciting violence, unlawful assembly and criminal intimidation, among others, the officer added.
