West Bengal police sources said according to neighbour's accounts, the accused Barun Majumder fired at the two women after barging into their home at Pipulberia under Hanskhali police station at around 7 pm.
As the two slumped on the floor, Majumder calmly walked away as neighbours trooped in and rushed the victims to Shaktinagar general hospital where the elderly woman Belarani Ghosh was declared dead and her daughter admitted in critical condition, the sources said.
Local people claimed the Kolkata police constable had for the past couple of days been following the girl, a college student, after being spurned by her.
