Acting on a tip-off that some car-borne miscreants were going from Bargarh road, SHO R P Dwivedi of Bara police station in the district followed their vehicle after which they opened indiscriminate firing at him leading to his death on the spot, they said.
Meanwhile, an alert has been issued to Fatehpur, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Banda and Mirzapur SP's to ensure checking of vehicles to nab the assailants, police said.
