Court asks police report on IO's conduct in gangrape case

Expressing displeasure at the shoddy investigation in a gang rape case of a deaf and dumb girl, the Calcutta High Court today directed the City Police authorities to submit a report explaining the conduct of the investigating officer.
Justice Sanjib Banerjee directed the deputy commissioner of eastern suburban division of Kolkata Police to submit a report within 15 days on the state of investigation and asked "how such officers can be in the force."
Moving a petition alleging police inaction, the mother of the deaf and dumb girl claimed that though over a year has passed since the heinous act, not one of the five accused has been arrested.

It was stated that on August 17, 2012, the girl went missing from in front of her house at Ultadanga in the eastern part of the city.
On August 19, she was rescued by officials of Jagacha police station in Howrah district lying on road in a serious condition and admitted to Howrah State General Hospital.
Using help, the girl told the police that she had been abducted and gangraped by five persons, who had then abandoned her on the road.

The mother, praying that the investigation be handled by some other agency, alleged that the investigating officer from Ultadanga police station had asked her to produce a certificate to prove that her daughter was deaf and dumb.

Taking serious note of this, Justice Banerjee questioned the government counsel as to how such officers can be in the police force.
Justice Banerjee then directed the DC ESD to submit a report within 15 days detailing progress in investigation and the conduct of the particular investigating officer.
